I am starting to plan my 2024 tax returns and want to get a headstart.
Free programs:
WealthSimple Tax -> at the end, the page will fill in the amounts in the boxes making you think you must pay. You can erase the $25 in the first box and enter 0 to continue. Don't fall for that trick!

Genutax (available to download Feb 24, 2025)
https://genutax.ca/
Taxman (2024 tax year not yet available)
http://taxman.coolpage.biz/
Cloudtax
https://cloudtax.ca/
Better Tax

Other low fee options:
Advtax

Starting with the 2020 tax year, StudioTax charges $15 per license. Now it’s $17.50.

TaxFreeway $9.95 for 20 returns Windows, $14.95 for Mac,

Just a suggestion - may want to classify the options in the OP under online (data stored in the cloud) or offline (data stored locally). This is often a strong determining factor as to whether people will consider them, even if they are free.

It's free if your income is <$20K.

GenuTax Standard does not support the preparation of the Quebec provincial income tax return, which is to be sent to Revenu Québec.

wealthsimple worked fine for me last year... despite all of the spam emails thereafter...
Don't worry, I've heard that old retirees that can't move on have also never sped.....even inadvertently.

Also, your data isn't stored on the Cloud with Genutax. Though the Cloud is probably safer than the CRA.
I switched from Genutax to WS last year cuz WS gives me free Plus service - might need those audit protection services lol...They're my primary broker so they have all my data anyway. Modern UI, but Genutax was pretty idiot-proof in asking you ever conceivable question if you set it to comprehensive mode (I did because I rarely know what I'm doing).

WealthSimple gives premium clients audit protection for free.
If you're generation tier, it gives you a personal consultant to discuss your situation They'll walk you through everything and provide audit protection - all free.

The Cloud has been hacked a lot more than the CRA. The more places that your information is stored online the more chances your info has of being stolen through a data breach. So it's best to minimize/eliminate that risk where you can. I store my tax info on a portable HD that I store in a firesafe.

First Thank you OP. Now I used to pimp for ST but not anymore. I will use them this year. or may be for next few. But I am sour on ST now.

I am crying today. Like all news anchors crying. But my tears may be different. Canada. Everything is on table? what does it even mean?
Canada is back baby but I am dragged out by my own. thru the snow. Sarcasm not permitted? but like jerk chicken.
